Why create a center of excellence in complex systems research in Colombia, some decades after the heydays of complexity and nonlinearity?
As complexity science develops, its focus is shifting from fundamental questions towards more specific and more applied problems, and its range extends towards ever larger and ever smaller scales, thus opening new opportunities for research and innovation in the field.
A host of problems specific to tropical developing countries require approaches based on complexity in order to be solved in a sustainable manner.
There is an incipient community in Colombia working on complexity, with fresh enthusiasm but lacking a forum to bundle, coordinate, and concentrate these diverse efforts.
The center is intended to respond to these challenges both in program and structure, reflecting the particular conditions and requirements of a developing country, and at the same time pretending excellence in its academic standards. The aim is to provide a stimulating environment for research, for encounters and communication across disciplinary frontiers and a platform for postgraduate academic formation.
The center will initially comprise 20 research groups covering a wide range of subjects from basic to applied research, subdivided into five sections:
Natural and artificial nanosystems Nanos Technology and industrial processes Techne Biological systems, ecosystems, and biologically-inspired systems Bios Terrestrial, atmospheric and oceanic processes in interaction with ecosystems Gaia Socio-economic systems Oikos
Special emphasis will be put on applications to regional problems, and providing consulting and training for public and private institutions.
